Debbie Nelson, Eminem’s mother, reportedly died Monday at the age of 69.
Nelson had been battling advanced lung cancer and died in St. Joseph, Missouri, according to TMZ. It remains unclear as of Tuesday morning whether she was at home or in a medical facility at the time of her passing. Her diagnosis was first revealed in September, with reports indicating she did not have long to live.
Nelson and Eminem had a famously strained relationship, often referenced in his lyrics, but their relationship had improved in recent years, according to the outlet.
Eminem’s tumultuous upbringing was a frequent subject of his harshest lyrics, often highlighting the neglect and dysfunction he claimed to experience while being raised by Nelson. His songs were filled with criticism and anger toward their strained relationship.
The rapper publicly accused his mother of abuse and aired their troubles in scathing tracks like “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.”
Nelson made headlines when she sued Eminem for defamation in 1999, which further fractured their already damaged relationship.
She later wrote a tell-all memoir about her son, titled, “My Son, Marshall, My Son Eminem,” in 2007.
Eminem and his mother had been working to mend their relationship and strengthen their bond in recent years. The rapper’s 2013 track “Headlights” touched on his regret over their past conflicts and the harsh words they had exchanged. In the song, he apologized for the role he played in the divisive relationship over the years.
Nelson congratulated her son when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. (RELATED: Eminem Reveals Daughter Hailie Jade Scott Is Expecting First Child)
